Prostate Symptoms

Prostate symptoms mimic what appear to be bladder symptoms such as urinary retention, microscopic hematuria, gross hematuria, and urinary tract infection.
Prostate symptoms can affect the prostate gland for several reasons and only a prostate exam can make the distinctions. A prostate infection can cause the gland to become inflamed. This can lead to abnormal urinary symptoms. Some patients experience enlarged prostate symptoms from a condition called BPH, or benign prostatic hyperplasia. An enlarged prostate can put pressure on the urethra and give you difficulty when urinating. Your prostate health can also be affected by prostate cancer.

Prostate symptoms can arise at different times of your life; however, many men begin to suffer from symptoms of prostate problems after age 40. The prostate gland naturally grows as men age, but sometimes it can grow too much and cause prostate problems. Men who are over 50 are at higher risk to develop BPH. If you have a family history of prostate cancer, you are also at higher risk for prostate cancer. Prostate cancer surgery called radical prostatectomy is performed by Dr. Fernando Bianco of the Urology Specialists Center by da Vinci surgery (robotic surgery) also known as da Vinci prostatectomy. As a leader in robotic surgery Dr. Bianco has trained urology surgeons from around the world.

Dr. Edward Gheiler the founder of Urology Specialists also offers prostate cryosurgery and prostate radiation along with the traditional prostate surgery called open prostatectomy and the minimally invasive laparoscopic prostatectomy for solutions to your prostate cancer. Our large Florida urology center has the medical staff and technology for every type of treatment for prostate cancer. Everyone has their own medical history and their own prostate cancer diagnosis which is why our Miami urology center is one of the few places where all options are offered with world class doctors and a large experienced medical staff to bring the best medical result to your specific diagnosis.

Signs of an enlarged prostate, signs of prostate cancer, and signs of a prostate infection can often mimic each other. Prostatitis may be one of many erectile dysfunction causes. You may have a weak urine stream or experience difficulty starting to urinate. You may find yourself stopping and starting while urinating or dribbling urine at the end of urination. Many patients have frequent urination or an urge to urinate often. For some men, this urge can be persistent at night, a condition called nocturia. Even testicular cancer symptoms can mimic prostate symptoms usually testicular lumps, swelling and pain are the primary testicular cancer symptoms however abdominal pain nausea and vomiting can be symptoms. Abdominal pain nausea and vomiting are also symptoms of kidney stones so any of these symptoms need to be followed up. High blood pressure can create microscopic hematuria which can also occur from prostatitis and high blood pressure is also one of the erectile dysfunction causes

More severe prostate symptoms can include the inability to completely empty the bladder. If the buildup of urine travels back up to the kidneys a condition called hydronephrosis occurs and a dismembered ureteral-pelvic junction may result. Our urology team would need to perform a kidney surgery called pyeloplasty to reconnect your kidney and ureter. With prostatitis, prostate cancer or prostate enlargement you may notice blood in your urine, or gross hematuria. This may also be a result of a urinary tract infection or bladder stones that are irritating the urinary tract. If symptoms persist or are left untreated, you could cause damage to your kidneys to the point where their function is impaired. Urologic surgery for kidney stones treatment or to remove a kidney mass from renal cell carcinoma is available at our urology center.

Prostate symptoms should be evaluated if they are affecting your lifestyle and urinary functioning. Ignoring them or waiting too long can cause more damage to your urinary system. Early prostate cancer detection is also important to increase your chance of prostate cancer survival. Through a prostate exam and prostate cancer screening tests, our doctors at Urology Specialists can diagnose the enlarged prostate gland and narrow down the cause of your symptoms. Then we can start you on a path for treatment and recovery. Proper evaluation and diagnosis of your condition is essential to receive the most effective prostate treatment.
